When considering the practice of home coffee roasting it is important to understand what materials are needed and the basic home coffee roasting process.

Materials Required

Home coffee roasting is a process that requires two key materials and the following of a process. Those materials are coffee beans that are green or unroasted and a heating utensil to heat the green beans to achieve roasting.

The best way to purchase green coffee beans is through the Internet. By simply conducting a search on the words green coffee beans you will be rewarded with a number of Websites that offer this product. Generally, you can buy these green coffee beans by the pound. Normally, the coffee is packaged in 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 pound packages.

In addition, when purchasing green coffee beans, the individual may be surprised at the extensive variety of coffee beans that are available. In fact, some Internet web sites advertise that they have over 70 different varieties of coffee.

The next important item required in the home coffee roasting process is to have a heating utensil. The individual who is wishing to be involved in the home coffee roasting process may choose to purchase an actual coffee roaster. However, there are common heating utensils that may serve as a roaster. The makeshift heating utensils can include a popcorn popper, a skillet, a wok, or just utilizing the stove’s oven.

Home Coffee Roasting Process

Once you have the green coffee beans and the heating utensil the home coffee roasting process can begin. The first step begins with utilizing the proper heat. That roasting heat should be between 460° and 530°F. It is also important to keep the coffee that you are roasting at a manageable amount. Therefore, it is highly suggested that the home coffee roasting be done in small batches.

For the most part the process is fairly easy and can be conducted in three basic stages. The first stage is that the green beans will begin to turn yellow and then will begin to brown. The longer the home coffee roasting process continues the darker the bean will become and the more robust the flavor will be. Following the browning process moisture will begin to be dispersed and at this point the familiar coffee smell will begin to permeate the air.

The next major step in the home coffee roasting process is the sound of a cracking noise. This cracking noise simply signals to the roaster that the sugars found within the coffee bean are beginning to caramelize. It is at this point that the coffee beans can be considered to be roasted. However, this is considered a light roast and will not contain have a deep coffee flavor.

As the browning process continues the coffee beans will continue to roast and become correspondingly darker. At some point in this continuing darkening process there will be a second cracking noise. This noise will signal the end of the roasting process as the bean will be a deep dark color.
